The swings, Alta Vista Park, San Francisco, 1991

Of all the children's games the swings seem to be the most individualistic of all. Sitting alone in the single board and attached to safety by chains, a child could swing and dream many things. There is no talk exchanges, or competition of any kind, except perhaps of who can go the highest. They can think they are flying, if only for a limited time, in the confidence of being watched by a parent or an elder sibling, or the photographer, as in this particular case.
