Alison Lapper, marble sculpture, mother, symbol

Alison Lapper was born without arms, and legs so distorted by malformation that she was given away to be taken into care by the state, when she was a baby.
She grew up to become an artist and to confront her physical disabilities head-on and now this marvelous marble sculpture faces directly at the back of Nelson's Column, in Trafalgar Square, London.
She was seven months pregnant when her body was cast by artist Marc Quinn, and then the craftmen of Pietrasanta, Italy, did the rest.
